Saggar Firing

For my saggar fired pieces I use aluminium foil as the container to enclose the firing fumes that create the surface decoration on the pot. A mix of sugar, Salt, copper wire, tree leaves, banana skins and other food skins I found on the farm, iron chloride is placed on the pot surface that is then carefully wrapped in aluminium foil.

The pot is placed in an outdoor bonfire kiln and fired to a temperature of approximately 900c, releasing fumes and smoke that adhere to the surface of the ceramic form. After cooling the vessel is washed and polished with beeswax made from the farm bees to protect the uniquely different surface decoration. And to make it watertight.

Here I have covered the vase with a wire brush, cabbage leaves, human hair and out-of-date chillies from the farm shop. All this was done after spraying the vessel with ferric chloride
